How to Assemble a Two-Roller Bracket for a Garage Door

When adding a garage door opener to your garage, it might be necessary to lower the door travel. The door travel is how much the door rises before it begins to fold back on the upper track. One way to accomplish less door travel is to convert to low-headroom track. Unfortunately this is quite expensive. A better way is to purchase a two-roller bracket known as a quick-turn bracket. Assembling a quick-turn bracket for a garage door is a quick process and lowers the door travel an additional 2 inches.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the current top bracket on one side of the garage door. If you have a steel door, remove the two screws securing the top bracket with a socket wrench. Wooden doors have carriage bolts that go through the door section. Remove the nut securing the bracket to the carriage bolts with a socket wrench. Once you remove the bracket on a wooden door, push the carriage bolts out of the door.

    • 2

Hold the quick-turn bracket in one hand with the leaf hinge pointing down. Find the two roller sleeves on the upper part of the bracket. The roller sleeves are the two round sleeves on the upper part of the bracket.

    • 3

Insert each roller stem into the individual roller sleeves on the quick-turn bracket. The rollers on the end of the stems should be pointing in the same direction and toward the side track.

    • 4

Slide the rollers into the upper door track. You will have to angle the bottoms of the rollers into the lower curve portion of the track and then straighten up to fully insert the rollers.

    • 5

Slide the bracket toward the garage door until the leaf of the hinge makes contact with the top panel of the door. Align the mounting holes on the leaf with two holes on the end of the top section, if you have a steel door. The end caps have pre-drilled holes for self-tapping screws. Secure the leaf to the door with self-tapping screws and a socket wrench.

Place the leaf flat against the end of the top section, if you have a wooden door. Drill a hole through the door at each mounting hole on the leaf with a 1/4-inch drill bit. Ask a friend to push two carriage bolts through the door on the outside. Thread nuts onto the ends of the carriage bolts and tighten with a socket wrench to secure the leaf to the door section.

Repeat the process for the opposite side of the garage door.
