Set up a stepladder under the garage door opener power head. Unplug the garage door opener power cord from the outlet in the ceiling. Move the stepladder beside the garage door opener arm that connects the door to the opener.
Pull down on the emergency release rope that attaches to the opener trolley and carriage assembly. The trolley and carriage assembly are where the garage door pull arm connects to the opener. This is the rope you pull when the power goes out to operate the door manually.
Find the solid pin that connects the pull arm to the trolley assembly of the opener. A cotter pin or a ring resembling a thin key ring secures the solid pin.
Remove the cotter pin or ring from the end of the solid pin. If necessary, use a pair of needle nose pliers to straighten the cotter pin for removal. Push the solid pin out of the pull arm and trolley assembly. The pull arm now is disconnected from the opener. Detach the pull arm from the door in the same manner. A pin with a cotter pin connects it to the bracket on the top of the garage door.
