Window Removal From a Brick Veneer Home

If you have a brick veneer home and are replacing the windows, you'll have to remove the old windows first to measure the rough opening and purchase new windows. This is not unlike replacing windows in a wood-framed home and follows the same process. This gives you the opportunity to replace your old window with energy-efficient windows, making the exterior more attractive. To remove windows from a brick veneer home, you'll only need a few tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Take everything off the window sills such as portraits and plants, then take down any window treatments such as curtains, blinds or drapes. You may have to use a screw gun to take down the treatments.

    • 2

Pull the interior trim off the window, if applicable, by hand or with pliers.

    • 3

Remove the trim and flashing from the home's exterior with pliers, a pry bar and screw gun. Use the pliers and pry bar to pull away the the trim and the screw gun to unfasten the flashing.

    • 4

Cut along the outside window frame with a utility knife to loosen the caulk. Insert a pry bar between the window frame and wall, prying the window a little loose.

    • 5

Unfasten the retaining screws holding the window in the brick veneer with a screw gun, then pull the window out from the exterior side.

    • 6

Scrape away the caulk and grime around the rough opening with a putty knife or razor scraper to make the opening ready for a new window to be installed.
