How to Replace the Brick Moulding Around a Window

Brick moulding is the heavy square moulding that you often see around doors and windows of frame homes or brick houses. Though it's called brick moulding, it's actually made of wood. It's a bold style of trim, meant to accentuate the windows and set them apart from the rest of the house. The moulding also serves to help seal the edges of the window casing from air flow. You can affix this moulding around the window of just about any style of home.

Instructions

    • 1

Pry off the existing brick moulding from around the window using your hammer and pry bar.

    • 2

Measure the width of the opening between the two top corners. Mark out the measurement on a piece of new brick moulding.

    • 3

Put the moulding on the miter saw, face up, so the marked bottom edge flush against the saw "fence" (the rail that runs along the back of the platform). Slide the moulding to put one of the marks under the blade.

    • 4

Swivel the blade 45 degrees outward, toward the close end of the moulding. Cut it.

    • 5

Move the moulding so the other mark is under the blade. Turn the blade in the opposite direction as before, again at 45 degrees, Make the cut.

    • 6

Set the moulding along the top of the opening, so the bottom edge is lined up with the window casing. The mitered cuts should angle up and off the corners.

    • 7

Use your hammer and trim nails to secure the moulding to the wall, putting them along the top and bottom every foot or so.

    • 8

Repeat the process for each side of the window. The miters on the ends of the moulding should butt tightly to form the corners.

    • 9

Run caulk around the trim where it meets the wall and the window casing.
