How to Remove a Window to Make More Space

Although windows are useful for letting in light, they can also get in the way when you're trying to arrange a room, especially when you have windows on every wall. One way you can make more space in the room is by removing a window, thereby giving you the freedom to place furniture or appliances in the space previously taken up by the window. Removing aluminum windows is less complicated than removing other type of windows, vinyl for example, and only requires a few common tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Duct tape
  • Pry bar or crow bar
  • Claw hammer
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the external screen or solar shade from the window. These may be fastened in place with clips or screws. Unscrew the screws or loosen the clips if present. Open up the window frame on the inside and lift the screen out of the window by using the screen tabs located at the bottom.

    • 2

Cover the panes on the windows with tape in an "X" fashion. Each window pane should be connected to at least one part of the window frame. This will help keep the window panes together if they break accidentally.

    • 3

Remove any external moulding around the window frames by prying it off with a pry bar or claw end of a hammer.

    • 4

Cut away any caulk around the edges of the window frame with a utility knife.

    • 5

Locate the screws along the edge of the window frame attaching it to the window opening. Unscrew these screws with a screwdriver.

    • 6

Gently pull the window frame out of the window opening. Use a crowbar or pry bar, if necessary, to pull the window. If the window seems stuck in place, look for wooden shims jammed under the edges of the window to keep it level, as these could be the cause. Remove the shims by pulling them out with a pair of pliers.
