How to Replace the Bottom Trim on a Wood Garage Door

The bottom trim on your wood garage door is a rubber or foam astragal. The astragal creates a seal between the garage floor and the door, preventing water from seeping into the garage when it rains. Over time the bottom trim becomes brittle or develops tears, resulting in a poor seal. Take care of the problem yourself using replacement rubber trim that is available at garage door service dealers and home improvement centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the garage door completely. If you have a garage door opener, unplug the opener power cord from the ceiling outlet. This helps prevent someone from accidentally closing the door while you are replacing the trim.

    • 2

Pull out the nails securing the trim to the bottom edge of the wood garage door with a claw hammer or small pry bar. These nails are often short 1-inch roofing nails. Once you remove the nails the trim will come off the door.

    • 3

Place one end of the new trim on the end of the bottom section of the garage door. The angled flange part of the trim should point to the inside of the garage. Tap a roofing nail through the trim and into the garage door with a hammer.

Stretch the trim slightly halfway across the length of the door. Do not stretch the trim tightly; only stretch it enough so there is little slack. Tap another roofing nail through the trim and door at the halfway point. Stretch the trim to the opposite end of the door and tap a roofing nail through the trim and door.

Cut off the excess trim even with the edge of the door with a utility knife. Tap roofing nails every 4 inches along the length of the bottom. Plug the opener power cord into the outlet, and close the door.
