How to Adjust Sticking Screen Doors for Sliders

Most patio slider doors have a screen door panel on the outside. This enables you to open the slider to allow fresh air in and leave bugs out. The screen door should slide as smoothly as the glass slider. Sometimes though, the screen door will stick or jam as you open or close it. This is usually due to the rollers or a dirty track. Adjusting a sticking screen door for sliders might involve replacing some parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the screen door halfway. Find the adjustment screws for the rollers. The screws are usually on the bottom edge on each side. Turn the screws clockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver. This raises the screen door rollers into the frame and lowers the door.

    • 2

Slide the screen door where the two small notches are in the lower track. These notches allow the rollers to clear the track when removing and installing the screen door. Grab the screen door on both sides and lift it up while swinging the bottom of the door toward you. Gently lower the door once the bottom rollers clear the lower track. Lay the screen door on a flat surface.

    • 3

Spin the rollers on the screen door with your finger. The rollers should spin freely. If there is dirt or grime on the rollers, clean it off with a rag and compressed air. Try to spin the rollers again. If the rollers still do not rotate freely, it is necessary to replace them.

    • 4

Slide a flat-head screwdriver between the body of the roller and inside of the screen door. Pry the roller assembly out of the screen door. Take the assembly to a home improvement center and match new assemblies to the old ones.

    • 5

Push the new roller assemblies into place under the screen door frame. The assemblies will lock into position.

    • 6

Clean the upper and lower screen door track. Vacuum out dirt and debris. Straighten out any bends in the side of the track with a pair of pliers. Rub paraffin wax into the upper and lower tracks. Do not lubricate the tracks or the rollers as the lubricant attracts and holds dirt.

Insert the top of the screen door into the upper track and push the bottom into the lower track. Turn the roller adjustment counterclockwise to lower the rollers and raise the door. Slide the door fully open and fully close, testing the roller height and slide. Adjust the rollers up or down as necessary until the screen door slides without interruption.
