Door Lock Latch Plate Installation

Lock installation is a basic home improvement project that every do-it-yourself homeowner should understand and be able to undertake. The latch plate is essentially a trim piece used to cover the hole around the bevel and is located on the narrow edge of the door. A hole will have to be drilled if the door is new and does not include hardware; otherwise you can simply install the new plate where the old one was located.

Instructions

  1. New Installation

    • 1

Measure the height of the other doorknobs in the house, or use a default height of 36 inches, then mark the narrow edge of the new door at that height. Place the lock template over the edge of the door and secure it with masking tape.

    • 2

Insert a nail into the edge bore mark on the template, then tap it with a hammer so that you can see the mark. Discard the template.

    • 3

Position the tip of the spade bit over the bore mark, then drill through the edge of the door until the edge and face bore holes connect.

    • 4

Place the latch assembly inside the edge bore hole, then place the latch plate over the bevel. Run a utility knife around the edge of the plate, then remove the plate and assembly.

    • 5

Chisel the wood inside the plate area until the latch plate is flush with the door edge.

    • 6

Install the rest of the lock assembly, then place the latch plate over the bevel and secure it with screws.

    Replacement

    • 7

Unscrew the old lock plate and remove it. If the latch plate is broken, measure the outline where the plate used to be located.

    • 8

Take the entire plate or the plate measurements to your local hardware store and look for a replacement that matches the existing assembly.

    • 9

Place the latch plate over the lock bevel, then secure it with the included screws.
