Instructions for Deadbolt Lever Handles on Kwikset Locks

A Kwikset deadbolt lock can add an extra level of security to your home, but only if it is installed correctly. The interior lever handle of the deadbolt lock allows you to easily lock or unlock the door. A lever handle that is not installed correctly may be a safety hazard by not allowing you to leave the building in an emergency situation.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the plastic insert that temporarily holds the deadbolt lever handle to the interior lock assembly with a pair of needle-nose pliers and discard it. Lift the lever handle straight off of the interior lock assembly and set it aside.

    • 2

Grasp the interior lock assembly by placing your thumb over the fitting that the handle was attached to and your fingers over the opposite side of the assembly. Pull straight out on the paper tab to separate the metal trim cover from the interior lock assembly.

    • 3

Hold the exterior lock assembly in place on the door. Place the flat metal interior mounting plate over the hole in the door opposite the exterior lock assembly. Ensure the arrow on the mounting plate is facing upward. Hold both pieces in place with one hand.

    • 4

Place the interior lock assembly over the mounting plate, ensuring that the arrow is pointing upward with the other hand. Insert the two long screws through the holes in the interior lock assembly and into the threaded holes in the exterior lock assembly. Tighten the screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 5

Locate the small cutout on the bottom of the metal trim cover that you removed from the interior lock assembly earlier. Line up this cutout with the small tab at the bottom of the interior lock assembly. Press the trim cover onto the assembly until it snaps into place.

    • 6

Push the deadbolt lever handle back onto the interior lock assembly. Turn the handle to the unlocked position. Push the hex fitting on the small set screw included with the deadbolt lock kit into the long end of the hex wrench provided. Insert the set screw into the small threaded hole at the base of the handle. Turn the wrench in a clockwise direction until tight. Pull the wrench straight out and retain it if necessary.

    • 7

Test the lock by twisting the lever handle. The deadbolt should slide in and out of the edge of the door smoothly.
