How to Reinstall an Andersen Window Sash

The sash in your Andersen window can be removed for cleaning, repair or replacement. Installing the sash back into the window can be a problem unless a certain procedure is followed. Some symptoms of a sash that was not installed properly are binding when the sash is raised or lowered, the sash will not stay up when raised or the sash seems too loose in the jamb.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sash into the window frame so that the bottom of the sash is resting on the window sill. Position the right side of the sash so that the groove in the edge of the sash fits with the raised lip in the right-side window jamb. Push the left side of the sash against the window jamb so that the sash is in the closed position.

    • 2

Pull the left-hand sash cord down from the upper part of the left-side window jamb. Push the tab at the end of the cord into the slot on the top-left side edge of the sash. Repeat to install the right-side sash cord to the sash.

    • 3

Raise the sash all the way up. Position the plastic left-side sash liner directly under the left side of the sash. Push in at the top of the liner so that it is flat against the left-side jamb. Push up on the liner so that it slides up in between the sash and the window jamb.

    • 4

Push the bottom of the sash liner flat against the window jamb. Slide the liner slightly as needed so that the two holes at the bottom of the liner align with the holes in the jamb. Replace the two sash liner retaining screws into the holes and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Lower the sash in the window frame to its closed position. Locate the two upper mounting holes in the sash liner. Replace the two retaining screws and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 6

Line up the mounting holes in the sill stop with the holes in the window sill. Replace the retaining screws and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver. Skip this step if your model of Andersen window did not come equipped with a sill stop.

    • 7

Test the operation of the sash by sliding it up and down in the frame. Note that the sash should operate smoothly with no binding.

    • 8

Removal of the sash can be accomplished by reversing the order of installation.
