How to Install an Addison Schlage Lockset

Shlage makes a variety of residential and commercial locks. Shlage's Addison lock has a handleset and what Shlage describes as a "Professional Grade 1 Security" deadbolt. It is available with a variety of different interior door knobs or handles and in several different finishes. Installing this lockset does take some preparation to the door and door jamb, but when the door is fully prepared, the lockset installation only needs a Philips screwdriver.

Instructions

  1. Door Preparation

    • 1
Make sure your hole saw has a pilot bit to center the hole.

Mark a point on the face of the door 38 inches from the finished floor and 2 3/8 inches from the edge of the door. Mark another point 5 1/12 inches directly above the first point, and another mark 8 1/2 inches directly below the first mark.

    • 2

Make two marks with a pencil on the edge of the door at the exact same heights as on the door face. These marks must be along the vertical centerline of the door edge, exactly in the middle of the door edge.

    • 3

Drill two 2 1/8-inch holes through the face of the door with a hole saw. Center the pilot of the hole saw bit on the pencil marks. Then drill a 3/8 inch hole through the face of the door at the lower hole.

    • 4

Drill two 1-inch holes at the pencil marks on the edge of the door with a wood-boring drill bit.

    • 5

Place the latch face plates in their positions at the edge of the door and mark them with a pencil, including screw holes.

    • 6

Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes where you made marks for the faceplate screw holes.

    • 7

Notch the wood inside of the pencil outline of the face plate to 5/32 inches deep. Use a wood chisel.

    Door Jamb Preparation

    • 8

Make two pencil marks on the edge of the door jamb at the same heights as the holes in the door edge. Mark these points along the vertical centerline of the doorjamb, but measure the centerline from the part of the door jamb that butts against the door when it closes. The hole locations in the door jam must match the locations in the door edges.

    • 9

Make two more pencil marks along the door jamb centerline. Space the marks exactly 5/16 inches above and below the upper mark. These will be your drill starts to make an oval hole for the deadbolt latch.

    • 10

Drill a 7/8-inch hole at each of the deabolt latch drill starts to make an oval. Drill both holes 1 1/8 inches deep with a wood-boring drill bit.

    • 11

Drill a 1-inch hole at the lower mark with a wood boring drill bit. Make this hole 5/16 inches deep.

    • 12

Position the door jamb strikes in their positions and outline them with a pencil, including the screw holes.

    • 13

Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes where you made marks for the strike screw holes.

    • 14

Notch the wood inside of the pencil outline of each strike to 3/16 inches deep. Use a wood chisel.

    Lockset Installation

    • 15

Adjust the deadbolt length to fit the door properly by swiveling the faceplate around to lengthen or shorten the deadbolt.

    • 16

Place the sleeve over the deadbolt, install it into the deadbolt hole at the edge of the door and screw the faceplate to the edge of the door. Make sure the top of the deadbolt is positioned upward. It will be marked as the top.

    • 17

Install the latch through the latch hole in the edge of the door and screw the faceplate to the edge of the door.

    • 18

Install the handleset into its hole at the exterior of the door with the spindle facing the edge of the door.

    • 19
After the door and jamb are prepared, you only need a screwdriver.

Install the screw and washer to secure the handleset's throughbolt.

    • 20

Install the interior lever or knob with the two included screws.

    • 21

Install the exterior deadbolt housing with the supplied screws.

    • 22

Install the deadbolt strike with the supplied self boring wood screws, then install the reinforcement plate over it. The reinforcement plate screws into the pilot holes at the door jambs centerline.

    • 23

Install the lower strike with the supplied screws.
