Telescopic Window Cleaning

Dirty streaked windows are very noticeable from the street and detract significantly from the overall appearance of your home. Clean tall or second story windows in early spring and again in the fall to keep them clear and attractive. Use telescopic window cleaning poles and attachments to clean windows instead of using dangerous ladders. Working from the ground with equipment and cleaning solutions that are immediately available produces the best results on difficult-to-reach windows.
  1. Window Washing Equipment

    • It is critical to use the correct equipment when cleaning high or tall windows. Window cleaning poles that extend to lengths of 8 to 30 feet are generally available at hardware stores. These lengths reach most residential windows for effective cleaning. A window cleaning brush, squeegee and angle adapter are necessary for a thorough cleaning job. The angle adapter allows the brush and squeegee to move at any angle necessary to reach the window. Two gallon-sized buckets and a garden hose complete the equipment needed.

    Window Washing Solution

    • Window washing solutions are available pre-mixed with water or in a concentrated form that needs to be mixed with water. There are also many formulas for window washing solutions made from household ingredients. Do not mix chemicals together unless you are certain that the combination is safe. Harmful gases or splatter may occur if the wrong chemicals are mixed. Mix together 64 oz. of cold water, 3 oz. soapy ammonia and 9 oz. of isopropyl alcohol for an effective window cleaning solution.

    Pre-washing Procedure

    • Pre-wash extremely dirty windows to ensure the dirt build-up does not scratch them during actual cleaning. Use the garden hose to rinse the windows and wet them thoroughly. Brush the windows while applying light pressure to dislodge the dirt. Continue to the washing process while the windows are still wet. Wash the tall or second story windows first, then clean the lower-level windows. This alleviates the possibility of dripping dirty cleaning solution on windows that have already been cleaned.

    Window Washing Process

    • Fill one bucket halfway with clear cold water to rinse the brush after applying the window washing solution. Fill the other bucket with window washing solution. Screw a soft brush attachment onto the end of the telescopic pole, dip it into the window washing solution and shake off the excess fluid. Wash the window using long vertical strokes from top to bottom. Rinse the window with clear water by starting at the top and pulling the brush straight down. Screw on the squeegee and begin at the top of the window frame. Pull the squeegee blade straight down, working your way to the other side. Dry the squeegee blade with a soft absorbent cloth between each downward stroke.
