How to Adjust a Hinged Aluminum Shower Door

Hinged aluminum shower doors have a tendency to stick in the opening. This is because the door frame becomes loose during use and shifts. Inside each corner of a hinged aluminum shower door is a corner bracket that helps keep the door square. Adjusting a hinged aluminum shower door is a simple process that does not require door removal. It is necessary to purchase wood shims, which are available at home improvement centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the aluminum shower door, and loosen the screws on the outside edge of the door with a Phillips-head screwdriver. There are two screws at all four corners of the shower door that secure to the corner bracket inside the frame. You only need to loosen the screws two complete revolutions.

    • 2

Loosen the two screws on the door handle in the same manner as the corner screws. The door handle screws must be loose to allow the front of the frame to adjust properly.

    • 3

Place a block of 2-inch-by-4-inch board under the front bottom corner of the shower door, with the door open at 90 degrees to the shower. If necessary, stack blocks of wood under the front bottom corner or cut a piece that is 1/2 inch shorter than the distance from the floor to the bottom of the door.

    • 4

Slide wood shims between the block of wood and the bottom front corner of the shower door. Tap the shims as necessary to raise the front corner of the shower door. Hold a block of wood under the door and smack the wood with a hammer. Add more shims as necessary.

    • 5

Place a 4-foot level across the top of the door to check the levelness of the door. Once the door is level, tighten the screws at the four corners and the handle. Remove the boards and shims.
