Aluminum Vs. Vinyl Windows

Aluminum and vinyl are two economical framing choices when considering windows for new construction or replacement in existing buildings. Vinyl has overtaken aluminum as the preferred choice for durability, maintenance and energy efficiency.
  1. Strength

    • Aluminum frames are three times stronger than vinyl and are recommended for areas prone to tropical storms and hurricanes because of their ability to withstand high winds. Aluminum frames are tough to dislodge, and they resist dents and cracks. Aluminum windows are well-suited for high-rise apartments and other large buildings. The greater mass of aluminum leads to better soundproofing.

    Style

    • Both vinyl and aluminum frames are easy to maintain. Although aluminum comes in many colors and may be painted, it retains an industrial look. Vinyl also comes in a variety of hues, but cannot be painted. Some manufacturers make vinyl frames that closely mimic the richness of wood.

    Energy Efficiency

    • Aluminum conducts heat and cold, therefore it is not a good choice for extreme climates. Many vinyl frames have foam in strategic areas to lessen air leakage and increase energy efficiency. Because vinyl windows are more energy efficient, they help reduce a building's carbon footprint.
