How to Detach Roman Shades From the Wall

Roman shades help block the direct sunlight into a room. Unlike vertical blinds, Roman shades do not have space between the slats, although they operate in a similar way. When you want to thoroughly clean the Roman shades or you need to replace them, it is necessary to remove them from the wall above the window. Detaching Roman shades from the wall varies slightly among the many different manufacturers. Once you see how the shade locks into the mounting brackets, it is just a matter of unlocking them to detach them from the wall brackets.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Roman shade fully using the pull cord on the side. Pull the cord to the right after opening the shade to lock the shade in the open position.

    • 2

Examine the top of the shade where it hooks into the mounting brackets for small levers. Some manufacturers use a locking lever to lock the shade rail into the brackets. Pull the locking levers open with your fingers, and then pull the Roman shade away from the brackets.

    • 3

Check under the shade rail for screws near the mounting brackets if your shade does not have levers. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 4

Press the top of the shade rail backwards with your fingers if your shade has no visible locking mechanisms or screws attaching it to the brackets. The top of the shade rail unlocks from the brackets.

    • 5

Pull the bottom of the shade rail forward, rolling the shade rail away from the mounting brackets.

    • 6

Remove the screws securing the brackets to the window with the Phillips-heads screwdriver once you detach the Roman shade.
