How to Adjust a Ryobi Door Closer

A Ryobi door closer is a hydraulic device that automatically closes and latches doors in homes and offices. Door closers can help lower your energy bill and keep your home more secure. By closing the door automatically, you don't have to worry about heat or air conditioning escaping through an open door. With the automatic latch feature, the door closes securely even if you forget to pull it shut. Adjusting a door closer is easy and requires only an Allen wrench.

Instructions

Insert an Allen wrench into the general-speed screw located on the end of the Ryobi door closer. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the amount of time it takes for the door to close from 180 degrees to 10 degrees. Turn the screw counterclockwise to decrease the amount of time it takes for the door to close the same distance.

    • 2

Adjust the latch-speed screw to change the amount of time it takes for the door to close the final 10 degrees. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the amount of time for a softer latching action. Turn the screw counterclockwise to speed up the door for a harder latching action.

    • 3

Turn the backcheck-valve screw to adjust the amount of backcheck force the closer applies if the door opens violently. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the backcheck force. Turn the screw counterclockwise to decrease the backcheck force.

    • 4

Change the amount of time the door closer delays if the door opens beyond 70 degrees by turning the delayed-action valve. Turn the valve clockwise to increase the delay time. Turn the screw counterclockwise to decrease the delay time.

    • 5

Open the door and allow it to close after each adjustment. Continue making small adjustments until the door closer operates as desired.
