How to Remove Hardware From a Bifold Before Cutting

When installing new carpet in a room with a bifold closet door, you might find it necessary to cut the door down. The carpet is often thicker than the previous flooring. Most cuts only need to be taken from the bottom of the door, unless there is a large amount that requires removing. It is necessary to remove hardware from a bifold before cutting so you do not damage the door sections or hardware. Removing the hardware is simple once you remove the bifold from the opening.

Instructions

Open the bifold completely so that the two panels fold together. Grab the sides of both panels with your hands, and lift up. Swing the bottom of the bifold door toward you, and pull down removing the door from the opening.

Unfold the door face down on a pair of saw horses. This places all the screw heads securing the hardware face up toward you. Remove the screw securing the lower pin bracket to the door with the screwdriver, and pull the pin bracket away from the bottom of the door.

Remove the screws securing the door handle with a Phillips-head screwdriver. If dividing the cut between the top and bottom of the door, remove the screws securing the upper hinge pin bracket to the door and pull the brackets away from the door.

Fold one panel of the door over the other, if you have a single piano hinge connecting the two panels. The piano hinge mounting screws will be facing the side of the door. Remove the screws with the screwdriver, and pull the hinge away from the door sections.
