How to Install Schlage Keyed Functions

There are multiple variations of Schlage keyed function locks. There are different series, types and functions, but the Schlage AL series cylindrical lock is one of the most common and simplest designs. There are a good deal of functions, ranging from an entrance function lock on which the handle is unlocked by a key from the outside or a push button from the inside, to a storeroom lock on which the outside is opened only with the key and the handle is stationary and the inside always is unlocked. The installation for these locks is the same regardless of the function. All AL series locks with a keyed function have what is called a core, which is what the key goes into to lock and unlock the lock. This is what the locksmith needs to create a duplicate key for the lock, whether it is a master key or the key to a specific area or room.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the template provided by the manufacturer to lay out or mark the prep holes on the door using a pencil. Use the appropriate drill bits and your hole saw or boring bit to drill out the prep holes on the door. If you are replacing a Schlage AL series lock, the prep holes will already be on the door.

    • 2

Insert the latch into the prep hole so that the curved portion of the bolt faces the frame where the strike is located. Use the Philips-head number two bit and cordless drill to gently tighten the two screws in the faceplate.

    • 3

Install the outside lock unit by guiding the body into the large hole on the face of the door. Align the screw hole posts with the two small holes above and below the large hole. Look from the inside hole and align the prongs on the lock body with the latch arms so that the handle will retract the latch. Once the lock is properly aligned, push it flush against the face of the door.

    • 4

Install the inside lock assembly. Start by inserting the cage spring over the handle post and align the screw holes on the cage spring with the outside locks screw posts. Feed the screws through the spring cage and the small holes in the face of the door until they reach the screw hole posts on the outside lock unit. Thread the screws into the posts but do not tighten them all the way.

    • 5

Slide the castle-nut bushing over the handle post and screw it onto the chassis threads at the base of the handle post. Use the the pronged wrench provided with the lock to tighten completely while holding the outside handle in place. You will hear a ratcheting sound as the castle-nut bushing tightens. Once this is tightened firmly, completely tighten the screws in the cage spring with your Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 6

Slide the rose trim over the handle post and align the two grip bumps with the groves in the cage spring and rotate it clockwise to lock it in place.

    • 7

Insert the driver over the handle post and then slide the handle on the post. Press the handle firmly until it locks in place.

    • 8

Set the strike plate in the cutout on the frame and secure with two screws using the Phillips-head tip number three and the cordless drill.

    • 9

Test the handles to make sure that they retract latch when operated before closing the door. Then test the key to make sure that keyed function operates properly. Close the door and operate the handle to make sure it is functioning properly.
