How to Install a Thermal Threshold

Stop wasting interior heating and cooling by installing a thermal threshold on all exterior doors in your home. A thermal threshold is made out of aluminum and seals the space at the bottom of doorways to help weatherize your home. Before installing one, remove the current threshold. Open the door fully and use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the current threshold in place. Use a chisel to pry up the threshold, being careful not to harm the flooring underneath and around the threshold.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your threshold, using the tape measure. Mark that measurement on the thermal threshold piece with the Sharpie pen. Measure the current holes used to screw the threshold into the subfloor. Copy these measurements to your thermal threshold piece and mark them with dots from the Sharpie.

    • 2

Use the hacksaw to cut the threshold along the line you marked. Use the metal file to smooth the cut edge.

    • 3

Drill holes where you made the dots. Caulk the bottom of the threshold piece in a zigzag pattern, which will work as an added moisture barrier.

    • 4

Place the thermal threshold in place, lining up the screw holes. Use the power screwdriver to screw through the drilled holes to secure the threshold in place.

    • 5

Caulk the edges of the threshold.
