How to Replace Window Glaze With Plastic Insert Strips on Single Pane & Double Hung Windows

Window glaze is used to hold the glass in a window pane and seal it from cold and moisture. Older windows used a putty-like glaze that was difficult to remove, but newer windows use plastic insert strips that make the process much simpler. Despite their easy installation, plastic insert strips protect the window from color and moisture just as well as putty-style glaze. If the plastic insert strips on your single pane or double hung windows have become worn, you can replace them with a few simple steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the screwdriver between the plastic strip and the window pane and pry the plastic strip away from the pane. Start at one corner and work your way slowly across the pane until one entire piece is removed.

    • 2

Repeat the same process for the other three sides, removing the snap-in plastic glaze pieces.

    • 3

Lay a new piece of plastic glaze against one edge of the window, aligning one end to the edge of the pane. Mark the other end with a pencil if it needs to be cut and use the utility knife to cut it to size. Repeat this process for the other pieces.

    • 4

Lay the plastic glaze piece in place against the pane, aligning both ends. Press the center of the glaze piece into window pane until it snaps into place. Move your hands out toward the edges, snapping the glaze into place along the length of the piece. Repeat this process for each glaze piece until all four sides are complete.
