How to Make a Parting Strip

If you looked at windows with sashes, there is usually a thin piece of wood located on each side of the window. Those pieces are called parting strips. Parting strips block outside air from entering your home. In older homes or windows, parting strips might be damaged, which can cause a draft. Save money on your heating and cooling bills by making your own parting strips.

  • Utility knife
  • Chisel

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a utility knife to loosen the paint between the right inside stop and the window frame. The inside stop is located on each side on the window on the window frame.

    • 2

Insert a chisel between the bottom of the right inside stop and the window frame. Pull the inside stop away from the window frame to remove it.

    • 3

Remove the window sash by pulling it away from the frame. Start by pulling the right side of the window sash away from the frame.

    • 4

Place two 1-inch pieces of cardboard or thin wood pieces on the both sides of the right parting strip. Grip the parting strip with adjustable pliers and pull it away from the window frame.

    • 5

Measure the dimensions of the parting strip. For reference, use the dimensions of 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch by 12 inches.

    • 6

Mark a thin wood plank with the dimensions of 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch by 12 inches. Use a ruler, tape measure and pencil.

    • 7

Cut the wood plank to the dimensions using a table saw. Squeeze wood bond into the window frame and reinsert the parting strip to the frame. Let the wood bond set for one hour.
