How to Stop a Leak in a Patio Door

When a patio door leaks water or air into the house, the result may be water damage on the floor or increased energy costs as heating and cooling the house becomes more difficult. Leaks develop between the patio door's edges and the door frame once the weather stripping that sits on the door frame begins to wear out and break down. When the weather stripping no longer provides a water- and air-tight seal, replace it.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from its hinges by inserting a screwdriver into the bottom of the door's hinges. Tap on the other end of the screwdriver with a hammer until the pins come out of the hinges.

    • 2

Pry the old weather stripping from the door frame using a screwdriver or pair of needle-nose pliers. If the weather stripping is secured by metal brads, tear the weather stripping around the brads and drive them into the door frame using a hammer.

Position the new weather stripping in the door frame to measure how it fits. Cut off the excess weather stripping using a pair of scissors. Peel off any adhesive backing paper from the weather stripping and press it into the same place as the old weather stripping.

Push metal brads through the new weather stripping and into the door frame, securing the weather stripping in place. Lift the door back onto its hinges and drive the pins into the hinges using a hammer.
