How to Remove a Wood Window Part by Part

Renovating an old home requires pulling out old windows to replace them with new ones. Old windows have small cracks in them that prevent them from keeping out the cold or heat. Have replacement windows in hand before you begin to tear out the windows. This will allow you to quickly replace the windows so rain or other precipitation doesn't damage your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on work gloves and goggles to protect yourself from nails and wood splinters.

    • 2

Wedge a paint scraper in between the trim around the inside window frame. Pry the jamb off the wall with the paint scraper or a crowbar. Set the trim aside.

    • 3

Remove the window sashes. Window sashes are the two panels that slide up and down or left and right to open or close the window. They normally come off the window easily once the trim is gone. If this isn't the case, look for a metal latch that you can reverse to unlock the sash from the window. The latch will be either on the top of the sash or on the sash track.

    • 4

Unscrew the storm window frame on the outside of the house. You will probably need to use a drill to remove the screws that are most likely painted over. Set the storm frame aside.

    • 5

Remove nails from the sill with a pair of pliers.

    • 6

Wedge a hack saw in between the window jamb and the wall on the inside of the home. Use a crowbar to widen the crack if you cant get the hack saw in there. Saw the nails that hold the jamb. Pry the jamb off the walls.

    • 7

Use the same process to remove the outer window frame trim.

    • 8

Remove the window frame. Be careful, as these are often quite heavy.
