The Patio Door Is Leaking Water

Weather stripping on the patio door's frame seals against both air and water that would normally leak into your house. The patio door and frame fit together with an air gap in between, but the soft weather stripping compresses and expands to fill in the gap. Once the weather stripping begins to wear out, it no longer creates a watertight seal, allowing water to leak into the house through the gap between the patio door and the door's frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the patio door, and press the tip of a screwdriver onto the bottom of the door's hinge pins. Tap the handle end of the screwdriver to pop the pins out of the hinges, which allows you to remove the door from the hinges completely.

    • 2

Pull out the existing weather stripping using a pair of needle-nose pliers, tearing the weather stripping out around the fasteners that hold it in place. Use a hammer to drive the old fasteners into the door frame until they sit flush with the frame's surface.

    • 3

Measure the new weather stripping against the inside of the door frame. Cut the weather stripping to size using a pair of scissors, and peel off any adhesive backing on the weather stripping.

    • 4

Press the weather stripping into the exact same spot where the old weather stripping sat. Press metal brads through the new weather stripping and into the door's frame to keep the weather stripping in place.

    • 5

Position the door back onto the hinges, and slide the pins in place. Drive the pins all the way into the hinges using a hammer, and then close the door.
