How to Add Weather Stripping to Double Pane Windows

Windows can be major source of home energy loss during the winter and the summer months. While double pane windows provide better energy efficiency than single pane ones, they still require weatherstripping. Weatherstripping products consist of a variety of materials, but they are all flexible and compress under the weight of the window. This seals any tiny cracks or crevices that allow exterior air to seep into the interior of the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlock and raise the double pane window far enough so that you can easily access the underside of the sash.

    • 2

Spray a paper towel with a degreasing cleaner until saturated. Wipe the entire bottom of the sash with the towel to remove all dirt and grease from the bottom of the window. Saturate a new paper towel with cleaner and wipe the bottom of the windowsill to clean it in the same manner.

    • 3

Stretch a tape measure from one side of the windowsill to the other to determine the proper length for the weatherstripping.

    • 4

Unroll a strip of either closed-cell foam or rolled vinyl weatherstripping and measure it to the appropriate length with the tape measure. Cut the weatherstripping off using scissors.

    • 5

Locate the protective backing on the weatherstripping and peel it off. Place the sticky side of the weatherstripping up to the left side of the bottom sash of the window. Press it firmly against the window and then run your hand along the entire bottom of the window to attach the remainder of the weatherstripping.

    • 6

Close the window and engage the lock to ensure that the weatherstripping does not interfere with the operation.
