How to Replace a Lever Operator on an Awning Window

An awning window opens and closes horizontally instead of vertically. This type of window system allows you to leave the window open when it is raining and still keep the rain out. When you turn the lever operator, or window crank, it operates a linkage that opens and closes the window. The crank can wear over time and with use and must be replaced. You can replace the lever operator on your awning window by following a straightforward procedure.

Instructions

Locate the setscrew at the base of crank's handle. Use a Phillips screwdriver or the proper size Allen wrench to loosen the screw counterclockwise. You should not have to remove the screw. Pull off the handle once you have sufficiently loosened the setscrew.

    • 2

Unscrew the three to four screws that secure the crank assembly to the window. Pull out the assembly to access the linkage.

    • 3

Remove the Phillips screw that connects the crank's linkage to that of the window's. Be careful not to lose the screw. Detach the old crank completely and dispose of it.

    • 4

Detach the handle from the new crank by loosening the setscrew at its base. It is easier to install the crank without the handle.

    • 5

Fit the new crank into the window where you removed the old crank. Connect the crank's linkage to that of the window's as the old one was. Insert the screw you removed from the old crank and tighten it using the Phillips screwdriver. Fit the crank into the crank well in the window and secure it with its screws. Install the handle and tighten its setscrew.
