How to Check Insulation Around a Window Frame

Poor insulation around your window frame leads to heat loss and a sharp rise in energy and heating bills but can be prevented and treated by routinely checking your home's window frames for air leaks. Air leaks commonly occur when new windows are poorly installed or due to the frame around older windows shrinking during cold weather. If found, the leaks can be filled with a window sealant that prevents air from escaping and eliminates the need to hire a repairman to correct the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Push and pull the window frame back and forth. If the window frame moves while pulling and pushing it, it has space around the frame that permits air to seep out.

    • 2

Look along the frame of the window. Your windows are poorly insulated if light peaks in along the window frame.

    • 3

Close windows, fireplaces and doors and turn off the home's water heater. Turn off the furnace and turn on exhaust fans to remove air from the home.

    • 4

Move your hand slowly around the window frame to feel for air leaks. If a cool or warm stream of air blows against your hand, the window frame has a leak.
