How to Remove the Hinge Pin on a Pre-Hung Exterior Door

When making repairs to your exterior door, it sometimes is necessary to remove the door from the opening. Fortunately, it is not necessary to remove the hinges to take the door out of the opening. Most exterior doors use butt hinges, which are two flat leafs with a pin joining them together. Removing the hinge pin on a pre-hung exterior door allows for door removal without compromising the the strength of the hinge mounting screws.

Instructions

    • 1

Score the paint between the head of the hinge pin and the top of the hinge sleeve with a utility knife. This helps to prevent paint from stripping off the hinge when removing the hinge pin and also cuts the seal of layers of paint.

    • 2

Place the tip of an old flat-head screwdriver at an angle between the hinge pin head and the top of the hinge sleeve. Alternatively, file or sand the end of a cold chisel to a sharp edge and place the edge at an angle against the head of the hinge pin.

    • 3

Strike the end of the screwdriver or cold chisel with a hammer to begin pushing the head of the hinge pin away from the hinge. Continue tapping the screwdriver or chisel with the hammer until the hinge pin is out far enough to remove it by hand.
