Push Plate Installation

Push plates are small metal plates made of brass, bronze or iron and attached to a door near or around a knob or handle to protect the door from wear and tear. Push plates can serve an aesthetic purpose and also keep the wood of the door from being dented and soiled from years of being pushed, elbowed or kicked open. They can be installed with a few common tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location to install the push plate. Many manufacturers include a simple template in their packaging to show the proper height and position for mounting. Follow the instructions included or choose the area just above where a standard door knob would be fitted.

    • 2

Mark the positions of the mounting holes on the door with a pencil.

    • 3

Drill a small hole for each of the mounting screws with an electric drill. Choose a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the mounting screws. This will prevent the wood splitting when the screws are tightened.

    • 4

Place the push plate in position and secure it with the included mounting screws. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws to avoid damage to the door.
