How to Repair the Drawstring on a Hunter Douglas Duette

Window shades keep your rooms from heating up by bright sunlight while decorating the windows. Unfortunately, the drawstring can break easily and either prevent the shade from adjusting or cause the slats to fall out of line. Hunter Douglas Duette shades offer a drawstring repair kit for purchase that comes with supplies and directions. For a less expensive option, you can repair the drawstring on your shade yourself, using a few basic supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • 4 inches of wire

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the shade on a flat surface in front of you. On the right side at the top is a plastic piece called a cord lock. Remove the cord lock by firmly pulling it straight out from the shade. Then remove the plastic piece from both sides of the bottom of the shade, by slipping a small flat-head screwdriver between them and the shade and popping them off.

    • 2

Remove the rails. Slide off the metal pieces from the top and bottom of the shade. Push the shade together from the top and bottom to collapse it completely.

    • 3

Feed a 4-inch piece of wire from the bottom to the top of the shade through the hole on the right. Leaving the wire in the hole, bend 1/2 inch of it over at the top, and string cord through the loop. Use a thick cord that matches the color of your blinds. Pull the wire back out through the bottom of hole, so the cord is pulled through. Knot the cord on the bottom of the shade by forming a loop with the cord, then pulling the end through the loop. Unwind enough cord for twice the length of your shade at the top, and then cut. Repeat the process on the left hole of the shade.

Pull the excess cord at the top to the right, so it is taut against the top of the shade. Replace the rail on the top by sliding it onto the left side over to the right. Feed the excess cord through the hole in the cord lock, and push it into the slot with a flat-head screwdriver. Push the cord lock onto the right side of the top of the shade, and pull the cord taut.

    • 5

Slide the bottom rail onto the bottom of the shade, and push the plastic pieces back onto each side until they snap into place.

    • 6

Pull the cords to lower the shade completely, and trim them to your desired length. Knot to keep them together. Hold a lighter to the end of the cords to melt them so they won't fray.
