How to Replace Garage Door Window Inserts

Window inserts give a garage door's window panes a decorative covering. A garage door window insert slips into the recess between the exterior side of the door's glass pane and its window frame. Over time, sunlight and weather causes the garage door window inserts to warp and change color; dark-colored window inserts fade and white-colored inserts often turn yellow. Garage door window inserts come from the manufacturer in sets, and each insert panel has its own pattern. To keep the garage window insert's pattern uniform, replace the entire set of window inserts at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip a window insert near one corner with a hand and pull it away from the window pane about 2 to 3 inches. If the window insert has a crossmember in its pattern, pull out on the crossmember while removing the corner. Work the insert's corner out of the window frame.

    • 2

Pull the edge of the insert out of the garage window frame, working from the loose corner across each side of the insert. Remove all of the garage door window inserts using the same method.

    • 3

Clean the exterior side of the garage window pane, using a window cleaner and a rag.

    • 4

Lay out the new window inserts below the garage door windows. Stand back away from the inserts and verify the pattern matches the door, paying special attention to the pattern's curve.

    • 5

Dampen the garage door window pane with the window cleaner. Do not dry the glass pane. The window cleaner lubricates the glass pane.

    • 6

Hold one corner of the window insert against its corner of the garage window pane. The textured side of the window insert should face away from the glass pane.

    • 7

Bend the window insert slightly and place each insert corner into its respective garage door window pane corner. This causes the center of the insert to bow out away from the glass pane.

    • 8

Apply pressure to the center of the garage door window insert and work the insert's edge into the seam between the garage door's window pane and its window frame. If the insert sticks to the glass or window frame, dampen the insert with the window cleaner. Repeat this for each window insert.
