How Do I Insulate My Porch Door?

A porch makes for a convenient outdoor sitting area, but during the winter, an improperly insulated porch door can let excess cool air into the house. Insulating a porch door will seal the cracks between the sides of the door jambs and stop the excess air flow into your home. You can insulate your porch door relatively quickly, using some basic insulation material.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your door with a measuring tape. Cut a strip of window insulation to match the measurement.

    • 2

Slide the insulation strip under the porch door. The strip will block cold air from seeping into the house through the bottom crack. Screw the strip to the bottom of the door using a drill. The strip should come with screws and pre-drilled screw holes.

Measure the height and width of your door with a measuring tape. Mark those measurements on a piece of window insulation plastic, also known as thermal insulation plastic. Cut out the insulation plastic along those measurements with scissors. The insulation plastic should be a single piece that corresponds to the door's measurements.

Position the single piece of insulation plastic over the exterior side of the porch door. Attach the insulation plastic to the door with masking tape.

    • 5

Use a blow dryer to heat the single piece of insulation plastic. The heat will cause the plastic to adhere tightly to the porch door, preventing cold air entering around the sides of the window pane in the door.
