How to Change the Frequency on a LiftMaster Garage Door Opener

Most garage door openers now use a rolling code frequency for remotes rather than the old dip switch method. This helps keep neighbors from accidentally opening your garage door when operating their remote control. However, sometimes it is necessary to change the frequency of the opener due to interference. Changing the frequency on a LiftMaster garage door opener requires some disassembly of the unit. This is because the only way to change the frequency is to replace the receiver logic board inside the motor head.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a stepladder under your LiftMaster garage door opener and unplug the opener's power cord from the ceiling outlet. It is a good idea to pull on the emergency release rope to disconnect the door arm trolley from the opener carriage at this time. Once you replace the receiver logic board, the up and down limits require resetting.

    • 2

Pry the upper corners of the lens cover away from the opener head with a small flat head screwdriver. The two upper corners of the lens cover have tabs that fit into slots on the end panel of the opener head. Unscrew the light bulb from the unit and set the bulb aside.

    • 3

Push the tabs below each quick-release wire connection on the end panel of the motor head and pull the wires from the connectors. Remove the six screws that secure the back of the opener head to the unit with a Phillips head screwdriver. Pull the end panel of the unit away from the body of the opener head enough that you can access the wire connectors inside. The receiver logic board is attached to the inside of the end panel. You need to replace the entire end panel to replace the receiver logic board.

Hold the end panel in one hand and disconnect the two wiring harnesses from the receiver logic board with your other hand. The wiring harnesses simply pull off the connectors on the logic board. The harnesses are two different sizes and will only attach to the logic board one way so there is no need to mark the harnesses. Remove the entire end panel from the LiftMaster opener.

    • 5

Position the new end panel, with the receiver logic board, over the open back of the opener head. Push the wiring harnesses inside the opener head over the connectors on the logic board. Push the wires inside the opener head as you line up the end panel mounting holes with the holes on the opener head frame.

Secure the end panel to the opener head with the retaining screws. Screw the light bulb into the light socket. Reconnect the wall button and safety sensor wires to the new end panel, according to the instructions supplied with the end panel. Generally, the door control wires connect to the red and white terminals, and the safety sensor wires connect to the gray and white terminals.

Plug the power cord back into the ceiling outlet. Press the “Learn” button on the end panel and press the control on the remote control. This sets the remote to the new logic board.

Adjust the open, close and safety settings according to the instructions that come with the new end panel or your owner's manual. Reconnect the door opener trolley to the opener carriage and reattach the lens cover once you reset the opener.
