Scratched Window Glass Remedies

Minor scratches on your windows are a pain, whether you have scratches on your car window or a window in your home. Several products from around your house are suitable for repairing the scratches. Home remedies are cheaper than professional fixes and take less time. Use scratched window glass remedies on small or surface scratches.
  1. Nail Polish

    • Use a small amount of clear nail polish on minor window scratches. Dip the attached brush into the bottle and paint a light coat over the top of the scratch. Keep applying layers of the nail polish to the scratch until the clear polish fills in the scratch. Once the polish dries, pour nail polish remover on a white cloth and gently rub across the top to wipe off any excess nail polish.

    Metal Polish

    • Metal polishing compound also works at removing minor surface scratches from glass windows. Rub a small dab of the polish onto the scratches and work the area with a soft cloth using a circular motion. The metal polishing compound slowly buffs out scratches that sit only on the surface of the window and do not go deeper. Don Vandervort of Home Tips warns that it takes a lot of time and effort when buffing out the scratches and if you use too much force, you may create more scratches.

    Toothpaste

    • A dab of toothpaste may cover light scratches on the surface of your window. Pick a white toothpaste and squeeze the toothpaste onto the window. Avoid using gel toothpastes, which do not set up and harden the way white toothpaste does. Wait a few hours or overnight, until the toothpaste completely dries and hardens on the window. Wipe a damp cloth over the top of the toothpaste, wiping off any excess toothpaste. Examine the window carefully, looking for any signs of scratches. For minor scratches, the toothpaste fills in the damaged areas. If you still see scratch marks, rub the surface with a soft cloth to buff out the scratches.

    Window Repair Kit

    • If the home remedies do not remove the scratches, then purchase a window repair kit from an auto supply store. The kit contains everything you need, including a filling compound and a buffing compound. The filling compound covers the scratches, while the buffing compound gently buffs the glass. Both products work out small surface scratches, but do not work effectively on larger or deeper scratches. Larger or deeper scratches may require you to replace the glass.
