How to Fix a Hinge on a Door That Swings Closed

If you have a door that swings closed when you want it to stay open, you need to adjust its hinges. This happens due to the top of the door being out of alignment. As your home settles, the frame around the door also settles, causing the door to come out of level. Fixing a hinge on a door that swings closed requires an assistant to hold the door while you make the necessary adjustments.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door wide and tighten all of the screws that secure the hinges on the edge of the door and the door jamb with a Phillips head screwdriver. Sometimes the screws simply work loose, causing the door to sag slightly and swing closed on its own.

    • 2

Close the door halfway if loose screws are not an issue. Place a level against the edge of the door on the latch side. Chances are that the door is out of plumb. The level will show you just how far out of plumb the door is with the opening.

    • 3

Push the door open and ask a friend to hold the latch side of the door. Remove the screws that secure the middle and top hinges to the door jamb with the screwdriver.

    • 4

Close the door halfway as your helper holds the latch side of the door. Place the level against the edge of the door and adjust it, as necessary, until the door is perfectly level. Ensure that the hinge leafs are against the door jamb before marking the new mounting holes. Open the door fully.

    • 5

Dip toothpicks into wood glue and insert them into the existing mounting holes in the door jamb. Wait for the glue to dry before cutting the toothpicks flush to the door jamb with a utility knife.

    • 6

Drill new pilot holes for the mounting screws at your new marks on the door jamb with a drill bit slightly smaller than the securing screws.

    • 7

Align the door hinges with the new mounting holes, with your helper lifting the latch edge of the door as necessary. Secure the hinges to the door jamb with their screws.
