How to Put Plexiglas in a Window Frame

Plexiglas is a trademark name for clear plastic glass material available at hardware stores in large sheets. It can be a replacement for glass window panes because it is more durable and resists cracking and breaking. Installing a sheet of plastic glass into an existing window frame is exactly like replacing the glass. However, you must use the proper saw and blade to cut the plastic glass down to size to prevent splitting or melting the edges.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the edge of the window frame to see if it has a thin wooden strip that runs around the perimeter where the edge of the glass resides. Not all frames have trim. Insert a screw driver or pry bar under the wooden trim to detach the nails and pull it up. Repeat the process on the other three sides of the frame.

    • 2

Look at the perimeter of the glass to locate the small triangles, called glazier’s points, which hold it to the front of the frame. Pull out the triangles using needle-nose pliers and gently lift the glass out of the frame. If the points are covered by putty, scrape the frame out with a putty knife to expose the triangles.

    • 3

Create an outline on the plastic glass that matches the measurement of the window. Use the tape measure and a grease pencil or dry erase marker, which both wipe off easily later.

    • 4

Put on safety glasses and install a carbide-tipped circular saw blade with 60 teeth and a triple-chip-tooth pattern. Cut out the outline on the Plexiglas using the saw and a steady pace.

    • 5

Open a tub of wood putty and roll it out in your hands until it is a long, thin string approximately 1/4 inch wide. Press it into the perimeter of the window frame.

    • 6

Insert the piece of Plexiglas into the window pane and push it against the wood putty firmly.

    • 7

Place a glazier's point flat on the Plexiglass with the point facing the frame. Push it into the wooden frame using the putty knife. Install additional points every 4 inches around the frame.

    • 8

Roll out another thin string of wood putty and press it into the perimeter of the Plexiglas. Run a putty knife around the perimeter of the putty to smooth it out into a professional looking appearance.

    • 9

Place the wood trim back into place around the edge of the plastic glass, if applicable, and nail it to the window using finishing nails and a hammer.
