Glass Cleaner for Scratched Glass

Glass is a delicate material that can easily develop scratches from a number of causes. The home construction environment itself can create marks on windows that can be difficult to remove. Wind damage and harsh abrasive cleaners can also create scuffs and scratches. Cleaners alone will not remove the damage from scratched glass, but polishing compounds can help to minimize them.
  1. About Scratches in Glass

    • Before attempting to remove the damage, assess how deep the scratches are. If you run your fingernail over the scratch and it catches in the groove, the scratch is too deep to manage on your own. You will probably need a professional glass repair for these cases. If they are slight, surface scratches, some polishing compound, a drill and a buffing pad can help to lighten their appearance, if not eliminate the scratches entirely. Do not use abrasive cleaner or any compound that is not approved for use on glass. These methods can make the scratches worse.

    Toothpaste

    • A home remedy you can try to remove light surface scratches from glass is with non-gel-type toothpaste that does not have abrasives in it. The toothpaste provides enough polishing ability to remove minor scratches on glass. Rub the toothpaste onto the glass and allow it to dry thoroughly. Then rub the surface with a soft cloth until the scratch is reduced. Rinse the glass with plain water to remove the paste.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda can be used to gently buff out minor scratches on glass, according to the GlassesCrafter website. Mix a thick paste of baking soda and water, and apply it to the scratched area. Gently rub with a cotton ball in a circular motion. Rinse and dry the glass. You may need to repeat this process to remove the scratch.

    Cerium Oxide

    • Cerium oxide is a compound made from a rare earth metal called cerium. It is also called “jeweler’s rouge,” because it is used in the jewelry industry to polish gemstones. Cerium oxide is mixed with water to form a thin paste, which is then applied to a buffing pad to polish out the scratches, according to the WarmGlass website. This method requires persistent effort to remove scratches but generally does a good job.

    Auto Windshield Repair Kits

    • Auto supply stores often supply windshield repair kits that can be used to remove small scratches in glass. These kits provide a polishing compound that is applied to a buffing pad on a wheel attachment to a drill or other tool. Gentle pressure on the surface of the glass will remove slight scratches on glass surfaces.
