How to Get Rid of Window Condensation in Winter

Condensation on your windows is normal during winter, as the window is exposed to the bitter outdoor temperatures and the warm heat indoors. As a result of the two distinctly different temperatures, the window forms moisture, which appears as beads of water or fog on the windows. Minor condensation is not a problem, but excessive amounts of moisture can damage the wall surrounding the window and increase mold production in your home. By adjusting your home's temperature and humidity, you can sharply reduce and eliminate window condensation during the cold seaon.

Open windows for 20 to 30 minutes. A stuffy home has a high level of humidity and increases the amount of condensation on the windows. Airing out your home for a brief period dispels some of the moisture in the air by allow cool air in.

    • 2

Adjust your humidifier's setting. A portable or furnance humidifier set too high increases moisture in the air and causes window condensation. Lower the humidifier to 30 to 50 percent humidity to balance the amount of moisture in your home and prevent mold growth.

    • 3

Operate a portable dehumidifier in rooms that have window condensation. A dehumidifier absorbs moisture from the air to make the environment drier and eliminates moisture that causes "sweating" windows.

Turn on your central air unit's ventilation fan. The fan pushes air throughout your home to evenly distribute moisture and prevents moisture from accumulating in a specific room. Run the ventilation fan for no more than one or two hours a day to prevent spikes in your electricity usage.

Avoid over-watering plants. Plants need regular watering to survive, but overwatering increases the amount of moisture in your home, which can also cause window condensation.
