How to Keep a Bifold Door From Jumping the Track

A bifold door relies on the correct placement and connections between its hardware to operate smoothly, sliding along its top track without jumping. If your bifold door does jump track, adjust it so the top and bottom pivot pins, along with the top roller, all fit into the top and bottom brackets and top track, respectively. This ensures each component does its job and keeps the door from jumping off the track again.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the roller on the top of the door as you slide the bifold door open and closed. Make sure the roller is fully inserted into the track, not sliding along the side of the track.

    • 2

Press down on the top roller and position the door so the roller fits into the top track, if necessary.

    • 3

Push up on the door and examine the pin in the bottom corner of the door. Make sure the pin is inserted into the bottom bracket and is not resting on the side of it. Tighten the bolt in the bottom bracket, using an adjustable wrench, to make sure the bracket is stable and not sliding. Move the door, if necessary, to position the bottom pin into the bracket.

    • 4

Close the bifold door. Examine the edge of the door on the hinge side, making certain it aligns straight up and down, leaving about a 1/16-inch gap between the door and the side jamb.

    • 5

Push up on the door, lifting the bottom pivot pin out of the bracket, and shim a book underneath the corner of the door to prop it up. Loosen the bolt in the bottom bracket. Slide the bracket toward the center of the doorway or toward the door jamb to create the 1/16-inch gap between the door and jamb. Tighten the bracket bolt with the wrench, then remove the book, positioning the bottom pivot pin back into the bracket.

Slide the door open and shut, making sure it slides smoothly along the top track.
