How to Change a Schlage Bathroom Doorknob

Changing the style of a door handle can change the overall look of the door. The average person with basic home improvement skills can change their own door knobs easily in just a few minutes. Bathroom doors require knobs with a push button lock, often referred to as privacy knobs. These types of knobs have a cylindrical lock that has been largely unchanged since patented in the 1920’s. Change your door knobs in about five minutes with only one screwdriver.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at both sides of the old knob. One side should have a push button or thumb turn lock in the center of the handle, while the other side will have a small hole in the center of the handle and two screws holding it to the door.

    • 2

Remove both screws with a screwdriver and set them beside your new door handle.

    • 3

Pull each side of the door knob in opposite directions away from the door to remove the knob.

    • 4

Open the new door knob. The knob with the locking button or thumb switch will have a long piece protruding from the center of the mechanism.

    • 5

Hold the outside handle, with the tiny hole in its center, over the hole for the door knob.

    • 6

Insert the long metal piece on the locking side of the handle through the hole in the door and into the center of the outside handle, making sure that it also passes through the slot for the existing door latch piece. Push the two together until each handle is flush against the door.

Insert the two screws that came with the new doorknob into the two screw holes on the outside door handle. Finger-tighten the screws, then tighten them further using the screwdriver.
