How to Fix Warped Bifold Doors

Bifold doors -- often installed on closets, laundry rooms, pantries and other rooms inside the home -- are, in many cases, made of wood. However, one problem that sometimes occurs with wood doors, including bifold wood doors, is warping. These doors are not only unattractive in appearance, but the warping may also affect how the bifold doors smoothly glide along the track, as should happen. Before you remove and toss out the warped bifold doors, focus on trying to straighten them out yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the bifold doors completely shut. Examine the middle hinge that connects the two door panels together, if the doors are slightly warped in the middle. Tighten any loose screws with a screwdriver, or remove the screws and the hinge, and install a new hinge and screws, if the hinge is damaged.

    • 2

Position two sawhorses apart, within a room, or in the garage or basement.

    • 3

Remove the bifold doors. Open the doors slightly. Lift up on the doors, slide the bottom pin out of the floor bracket and pull the top of the door down, removing the door from the track above.

    • 4

Lay the bifold doors across the two sawhorses, with the sawhorses spaced at an appropriate distance to support the door weight. Lay the doors with the two panels open, and the warped side facing up.

    • 5

Place a towel on top of the doors, over the warped section. Stack weights or bricks on top of the towel. Avoid overloading the doors. Use enough weights or bricks to weigh the doors down straight, without warping them in the opposite direction. Leave the doors in this position for the length of time it takes to straighten them, which might take several days, depending on how warped the doors are. Monitor the door's progress during this time.

Remove the weights or bricks from the bifold doors, along with the towel. Reinstall the straight doors in the door frame. Insert the bottom pin on the doors into the floor bracket, and push down on the spring-loaded top roller; install the top pin into the top bracket and the roller into the overhead track.
