How to Change the Lights in a Garage Door Opener

The light on most garage door openers stay on for a few minutes after opening or closing the door to allow enough time to go from the garage to the entry door of your home. The openers use a 60-watt bulb that eventually burns out like any other light bulb in your home. Changing the lights in a garage door opener does require some disassembly to access the bulb socket. Fortunately, the process is generally the same regardless of the manufacturer.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand a stepladder under the garage door opener motor head so you can reach the lights and power cord comfortable. Unplug the opener power cord from the ceiling outlet.

    • 2

Remove the lens cover from the door opener. Some lens covers have screws at the corners requiring a Phillips screwdriver for removal. Some covers only require squeezing the top and bottom together with your fingers to unhook the cover tabs from the opener head.

    • 3

Hold the light bulb socket with one hand, and unscrew the light bulb with your free hand. Holding the socket helps prevent it from popping away from the opener head.

    • 4

Thread a new 60-watt light bulb into the socket until it stops. Place the lens cover back over the light, and secure it to the opener head. Plug the power cord into the ceiling outlet.
