How to Cut a Brick Mold

When you install a window or door in your brick home, you will notice a small gap between the window or door and the rough opening. This gap makes your home less energy efficient as well as offers an entryway for water, insects and debris. Brick mold, which is actually made out of wood and not brick, covers this gap. It is important to cut the brick mold appropriately so it adds to your brick home's appeal rather than detracts from it.

Instructions

Decide whether to cut the brick molding at a 45-degree angle, so two pieces meet to form a 90-degree corner, or straight across, so one piece's end butts up against another piece's side to form a 90-degree corner.

    • 2

Install a fine-tooth cutting blade in a miter saw. Set the miter saw according to how you wish to cut the brick mold. If you wish to miter the ends, set the miter saw to a right-hand 45-degree cut. If you wish to butt the ends together, set the miter saw to a straight zero-degree cut.

    • 3

Measure the width of the opening's top edge. If you are butting up the brick mold at the corners, multiply the brick mold's width by 2 and add this to the measurement. Transfer this length to a brick miter.

Lay the brick mold on the table saw, positioning it as if the table saw's fence -- the back edge on the saw's table -- were the brick wall. Line up the saw blade with the first measurement mark and cut through the brick molding. Slide the brick mold down, line up the second measurement mark with the saw blade, and make the second cut.

Measure the length of the opening on both the left and right sides. If you are butting up the brick mold at the corners, add the brick mold's width once to each side. Transfer this measurement to two pieces of brick mold and cut them with the miter saw the same way you cut the first piece.

Measure the width of the opening along the bottom edge. Transfer this measurement to a piece of brick mold and cut it.
