How to Get a Yale Doorknob Off

Yale is a manufacturer of locksets, deadbolts, doorknobs, exterior handlesets and other door hardware. Yale doorknobs can be used on interior or exterior doors and can be locking or nonlocking. A Yale handleset that has a large handle for gripping and a thumb button to disengage the door latch can be used on door exteriors. A variety of long-lasting finishes are available, but some doorknobs or handlesets may corrode or become dented or damaged over time. If the door latch still works fine, a replacement doorknob or handleset can be installed.

Locate the release button on the neck of the doorknob.

    • 2

Depress the release button with the edge of a key, a nail or another similar object.

    • 3

Slide the doorknob off the door latch assembly while continuing to hold the release button in.

    • 4

Remove the tool used to depress the release button once the slot in the neck of the doorknob has slid past the button.

    • 5

Slide the doorknob off the latch assembly and remove it.

    • 6

Replace the doorknob by pushing the knob onto the tube of the latch assembly on the door. Rotate the knob until the slot in the neck of the knob lines up with the release button on the tube. Depress the release button with a suitable tool while pushing the knob inward. Remove the tool. Continue to push the knob inward until the spring-loaded release button pops through the slot in the neck of the doorknob.
