How to Install a Push Garage Door Opener Button

Installing a garage door push button offers a convenient way to open your garage door from your entry door. Most door openers come with either a single push button or a wall station. Replacement push buttons are available at home improvement centers and include the necessary low-voltage wire as well as fasteners. The push button looks similar to a standard door bell button. Installing a push garage door opener button is generally the same among the many different opener manufacturers.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the garage door opener power cord. Position the push button within reach of the entry door from the home into the garage and at least 5 feet off the floor. This distance from the floor helps prevent small children from operating the garage door opener.

    • 2

Push the end of a nail through the push button mounting holes to make a small impression in the wall. Drill two holes at the mounting indentations with a 5/23-inch drill bit if mounting into drywall with no stud. Tap plastic wall anchors into the holes with a hammer. If a stud is in line with the mounting holes, there is no need to drill holes.

    • 3

Separate the two wires at the end of the low-voltage bell wire with a utility knife. Simply slice into the insulation between the two wires and separate the last inch of the ends.

    • 4

Strip 1/4-inch of insulation from the end of the low-voltage wire with wire strippers. Loosen the terminal screws on the back of the push button with a Phillips head screwdriver. Hook the end of the striped wire around the neck of the screw with a “2” by it and tighten the screw to secure the wire. Bend the end of the solid white wire around the terminal screw with a “1” and tighten the screw.

    • 5

Place the push button against the wall over the mounting holes. Position the low-voltage wire through the notch on the back top of the push button. Secure the push button to the wall with the retaining screws.

    • 6

Run the low-voltage wire straight up the wall and onto the ceiling until the wire is directly above the rear of the opener head. Attach the low-voltage wire to the wall and ceiling with insulated staples. Position the staples over the wire and tap them into the wall and ceiling with a hammer. It might be necessary to use a stepladder to reach the ceiling when attaching the staples.

    • 7

Cut the wire 6 inches below the opener head with the wire strippers. Separate the ends of the wire as you did on the opposite end and remove a 1/4-inch of insulation from the end of each wire.

    • 8

Secure the striped wire to the “2” terminal on the garage door opener head and the white wire to the “1” terminal. Plug the opener power cord into the outlet and test the push button.
