How to Grease a Squeaky Garage Door

Greasing a squeaky garage door eliminates the noise and helps the components last longer. However, the garage door components cannot use standard grease. Thick grease along the door tracks or rollers attracts and holds dirt, sand and other abrasives. This eventually causes rollers and other components to wear out more quickly. Although there are specialized garage door lubricants, greasing a squeaky door only requires spray lithium grease and spray silicone lubricant available at home improvement centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the garage door and inspect the rollers and hinges. Using a wrench, tighten any loose bolts or nuts securing hinges to the door. Loose bolts and nuts cause squeaking as the hinge moves up and down the bolt shaft. Replace any damaged rollers.

    • 2

Pull down on the opener release rope, if you have a door opener. The release rope is on the trolley where the door connects to the opener rail. Open and close the door manually to ensure that it does not bind, especially in the curve of the track. This sometimes causes squeaking as the roller stems jam against the sides of hinges.

    • 3

Tap the inside of the track-securing bracket on the wall a couple of times, if the door binds. This moves the track away from the door slightly. Do not tap or adjust the bracket connecting the front of the upper track to the wall. This is under pressure from the spring and cable.

Clean the inside of the door track with a rag while the door is open. Remove any gunk or debris in the curve of the track where the door turns. Spray a light film of lithium grease inside the door track. Do not apply axle grease or other thick greases because these attract dirt, which wear out rollers prematurely.

    • 5

Lower the garage door and allow the door trolley to engage to the opener. Spray the hinges where the roller stems enter. There is a small seam along the stem sleeve of the hinge where it is possible to spray a light film of lithium grease.

Apply a light film of lithium grease to the side of the garage door chain. Spray the garage door springs with spray silicone. Operate the garage door with the opener to allow the lubricants to distribute evenly in the springs and opener chain.
