Adding Peepholes to Front Doors

Equipping an entry door with a security viewer, commonly referred to as a “peephole” viewer, adds a level of privacy and safety by allowing you to see a visitor to your house or apartment without opening the door. Peephole viewers are available in a range of sizes and optic perspectives, and the basic installation procedure takes only minutes to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the desired viewer location on the interior door surface. The typical positioning of a viewer is centered in the door width and approximately 5- to 5-feet 4-inches from the interior floor surface, but the viewer can be placed at any height that is comfortable to use by the residents.

    • 2

Transfer the peephole viewer position measurements determined in Step 1 to the exterior side of the door.

    • 3

Drill the hole using a 1/2-inch bit mounted in an electric drill. Drill the hole from one side first until about halfway through the door, then move to the opposite side and drill the remainder of the way through the door to complete the hole. This method minimizes surface splintering and chipping around the edge of the hole.

    • 4

Separate the peephole viewer’s two parts by unscrewing the treaded interior cylinder from the viewer’s exterior lens.

    • 5

Insert the exterior lens assembly into the drilled hole from the exterior side of the door and hold it in place.

    • 6

Insert the interior tube into the drilled hole on the interior side of the door and thread it onto the exterior lens assembly until tight.
