Reinforcing Door Hinges

Sometimes a door hinge isn’t strong enough to hold up a heavy door, or the door itself gets a lot of use. Both of these cases call for a reinforcement door hinge. This is an extra door hinge that holds more weight, which prevents sagging, and allows the door to stand up to heavy use without damage. Reinforcement hinges are usually only applied at the top of a door to support and reinforce the door’s other hinges.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top corner of the door frame on the same side of the frame as the other hinges. Measure out a rectangle 6 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches long at the top of the frame. The rectangle should be flush with the bottom edge of the frame. One inch of the rectangle should protrude over into the side of the door frame, past the door frame's upper corner, to support the pivot point, the part of the hinge plate that holds the hinge. This gives you the proper measurement as to where to install the upper hinge plate of the reinforcement hinge.

    • 2

Line the upper part of the hinge plate in the upper corner of the door frame on the place you measured. Make sure the pivot point is in the corner of the door frame.

    • 3

Drill the screws into the five holes in the upper hinge plate. The screws should screw into the door frame and hold the hinge in place.

    • 4

Place the lower hinge plate in the upper corner of the door below the upper hinge plate in the door frame. Line the hinge plate up so the pivot point hangs over the corner of the door by about 1 inch and is directly below the upper hinge plate's pivot point. The top of the hinge plate should be flush with the top of the door.

    • 5

Drill the screws into the four holes in the lower hinge plate.

    • 6

Close the door so the pivot points in the hinges line up. The hinges should line up automatically if you installed the hinge plates correctly.

    • 7

Place the screw into the hinge's pivot points to hold them together. Insert one screw into the top hinge's pivot point and one into the bottom hinge's pivot point. Hand tighten the screws to hold them in place.
