How to Fix Door Creaks

A creaking door is not only annoying, but left as is, it may soon turn into a bigger and more time-consuming repair. Loose or dry hinges are often the problem when a door begins to make noise. Hinges become loosened with frequent use, and age dries them. Sometimes doors are treated less than gently by family members on the go. Regardless of the cause, sooner or later, the problem must be dealt with. Doors need occasional lubrication, and this simple fix can quiet even the most irritating of squeaks and creaks.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the door, and move it back and forth slowly a few times to determine the origin of the creaking. Tighten any loose screws.

    • 2

Holding the can upright, spray lubricant onto the screws in the hinge.

    • 3

Hold the doorknob, and swing the door back and forth a few times to work in the lubricant. If the creaking is still present, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws. Spray a little more lubricant into the holes, and tighten the screws.

    • 4

Test for creaks by moving the door back and forth again. Repeat the process if the creaking remains. You may need to swing the door several times until the lubricant is worked in thoroughly, and the noise has been eliminated.

Use a rag or paper towels to wipe excess oil from the hinges.
