How to Adjust a Rixson Door Closer

A Rixson door closer is used to close a high-traffic door automatically. You may encounter this type of door closer on a daily basis when entering or leaving office buildings, stores or other public structures. To compensate for wear and changing temperatures, a Rixson closer may have one or more adjustment screws to keep the door opening and closing smoothly.

Instructions

  1. Closing Speed

    • 1

Open the door. Place a stop under the bottom edge of the door to keep it open, if necessary. Locate the closing valve adjustment screw on the closer housing.

    • 2

Turn the screw in a clockwise direction with a flat blade screwdriver to decrease the closing speed of the door.

    • 3

Turn the screw in a counter-clockwise direction to increase the closing speed.

    • 4

Remove the door stop and test the operation of the door.

    • 5

Open the door and make further adjustments to the closing speed as needed.

    Latch Speed

    • 6

Open the door. Place a stop under the bottom edge of the door to keep it open, if necessary. Locate the latch speed valve adjustment screw -- which is usually the center screw -- on the closer housing.

    • 7

Turn the screw in a clockwise direction with a flat blade screwdriver to decrease the latch speed of the door if it latches with too much force.

    • 8

Turn the screw in a counter-clockwise direction to increase the latch speed if the door does not latch fully when closed.

    • 9

Remove the door stop and test the operation of the door.

    • 10

Open the door and make further adjustments to the latch speed as needed.

    Backcheck and Delayed Reaction

    • 11

Open the door. Place a stop under the bottom edge of the door to keep it open, if necessary. Locate the backcheck or delayed reaction valve adjustment screws on the closer housing.

    • 12

Turn the delayed reaction adjustment screw in the direction desired to slow down or speed up how quickly the door starts to close when fully open.

    • 13

Turn the backcheck screw in the direction desired to adjust the amount of force needed to hold the door in an open position.

    • 14

Remove the door stop and test the operation of the door.

    • 15

Open the door and make further adjustments to the backcheck and delayed reaction as needed.
